SUMMARY

This article examines the current practices among a set of gender-transformation initiatives in South Africa to see what lessons can be derived from them. The study looks at how South African men participating in these programs responded to three thematic messages frequently found in gender-transformative work: 1) the ‘costs of masculinity’ men pay for adherence to harmful gender constructs; 2) multiple forms of masculinity; and 3) the human rights framework and contested rights.
