Scorecard on GBV Laws and Policy in Africa

In preparation for the 57th Commission on the Status of Women held in New York – March 2013, Sonke Gender Justice, with support from UNFPA, SIDA and UN Women, developed a scorecard of GBV Laws and Policies in Africa in order to address the priority theme, the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls. This scorecard provides an assessment of whether national policies and laws in the African region sufficiently attempt to engage men and boys in the prevention and elimination of gender-based violence (GBV).

More Awareness, More Reporting: How Men Can Support the Fight Against GBV?

For the Planned Parenthood Association of Zambia (PPAZ), the increasing number of women reporting cases of gender- based violence (GBV) is a positive sign. While it may seem like a bad thing, it actually means that sensitisation and awareness raising efforts are having a successful impact. In March 2013, the Law Development Association, a group offering legal services to victims of GBV in Choma, Zambia, reported an average of six to ten cases per day; a significant increase compared to last year.

She has worked for United Nations in Burundi helping to gather information on GBV during the Burundian civil war and its aftermath, and worked as a Human Rights Assistant handling cases of GBV and working together with UNICEF in Burundi. She has also assisted female ex-combatants left behind by disarmament, demobilization and reintegration, who are often not included in the DDR programs even though they participated in the war.

This exciting new initiative was established to expand the skills and knowledge of female and male advocates, civil society practitioners, policy makers and other stakeholders in sub-Saharan Africa on ways to garner the greater involvement of men and boys in gender equality, but also with the aim of building a strong network of future leaders and gender justice advocates.
