Sonke and MEA participate in the 60th Commission on the Status of Women at UN Headquarters, New York City.

MenEngage Africa and Sonke Gender Justice are taking part in the 60th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW60), which starts today, 14th March 2016 and will end on the 24th, at the United Nations’ (UN’s) headquarters in New York.

We are part of ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organisations, UN entities and member states from all regions of the world gathering for the two-week annual meeting, whose priority theme this year is “Women’s Empowerment and its link to Sustainable Development”.

The conference’s focus is on the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls. MenEngage Africa and Sonke Gender Justice will be leading, hosting and participating in a host of activities over the duration of the CSW60.

Today, we start off by participating in a session on Sharing the Care: How to recognise, reduce and redistribute.

This is a formal side-event at CSW60 focusing on unpaid care work as one of the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event will focus not only on the recognition and value of unpaid care work within a fair economic system, but also the need to “reduce and redistribute” that work. It will also explore to whom or what systems exactly, this work should be redistributed, providing concrete and country-specific examples.

WHERE: UN Headquarters CR 11
TIME: 1:15 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
ORGANISERS: UN Women, Iceland, Sweden, MenEngage Alliance, MenCare, Promundo and others.
